Angola International Airport to open

Construction on the new Angola International Airport, which is currently underway, is due for completion around mid-2017. The new $6.3 billion airport will secure an increase in logistical networks from Angola to the rest of the world.

Since the end of the civil war in 2002, the pace of economic growth in Angola has accelerated considerably. The construction of a large international airport was necessary, and once completed, the new airport is expected to receive around 15 million passengers annually – an increase from the three million it receives currently.

Angola is conveniently situated as a layover connection between Africa and the world’s biggest cities in both Europe and America. Although increasingly preferred as a favourite travel destination, Angola remains one of Africa’s largely unexplored countries. Within recent years, however, the capital of Luanda has drawn more and more international tourists.

The new airport is some 40 kilometres southeast of the city centre, in the Bom Jesus district in Luanda Province, and will be an alternative to the existing Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport.
